Were that the biggest driver of such bills was ignorance, because we might be able to end them by simply teaching people. But the reality is that such bills exist because there is a significant portion of our nation’s population who believe that giving women free agency over their lives and their bodies was the biggest mistake made. If they could put a ban on women in the workplace and repeal the 19th Amendment, they would do it tomorrow.

Yes, the reason being is they believe that it and busing “ruined” the schools by forcing white students to be moved from great schools in white neighborhoods to failing schools in black ones in order as a form of socialism. You have to remember that, for many white folks at the time Brown was handed down, racial animosity and the push for equality had nothing to do with centuries of inequality and everything with a communist plot to “destroy” everything good about America.

It’s what led to the branch of wingnut judicial thought we know as “originalism,” the idea that the Warren and Burger Courts had “overstepped” on cases like Brown and Roe by not sticking strictly to what was spelled out implicitly in the Constitution, and thus had “legislated” from the bench.

What the intellectual (or whatever is left that passes for intellectual) part of the legal conservative movement really wants (and they’ve wanted it for decades) is a return to the Lochner era. They want to so weaken federal, state, and local government to the point that none of them can do anything to stop bad results. For those that don’t know about Lochner decision here, nice summary here.

I saw an article earlier this morning that didn’t pull punches in saying that the DNC has basically conceded the impeachment fight to Trump. That quibbling over the redacted portions of the Mueller Report may actually hurt the DNC not because it looks like they’re “harassing” Trump, but because it likely won’t change anything about the conclusions of the Report itself. And the conclusions were so damning that the DNC’s refusal to act on them can only really be read as irrational fear that doing so will “help” Trump win reelection.

The DNC has set itself up to go to the polls next year arguing that Donny’s actions are so heinous that he deserves to be removed from office, but will only lead many voters to ask why the DNC did nothing if that is the case.

For two years, leadership kept saying “wait for the Mueller Report.” The Mueller Report came and now it’s basically a McGuffin… leadership’s position now seems to be “eh, what are you going to do this close to an election?” Which is stupid because we have elections all the damn time in this country.

IMHO, the problem began with Nancy’s “He’s not worth impeaching” remark to the press weeks ago. At the time, folks laughed at it and saw it as a bruise to Donny’s ego. But since then, it’s rung like false bravado, the sort of glib remark you make to explain inaction. If the Report is that damning, why hold off on going after Trump?

The bit for weeks to explain inaction has been that they’re “building the case for impeachment.” No offense to folks who still believe that, but at this point it looks more like they’re building a case for inaction. That they’re not working towards impeachment so much as working to make a case why they “can’t” impeach Trump. And even if that is not the case, it is the perception they are creating that will hurt them next year.

two good comments to that article:

“One step at a time, people. Don’t worry, it’s not like Trump is ever going to stop providing additional proof of his complete and general contempt for lawfulness”.

and

Impeachment hearings in Congress should begin with a clear explanation that they are unlikely to produce a conviction in the Senate. That can’t be emphasized too much or too loudly. The purpose of impeachment would be to acquire testimony for the public’s use in governing themselves, including calling and writing their Senate and House representatives, altering their votes, or even protesting in the streets.

Let the Republican (Trump) controlled Senate deal with trying to cover-up information. Let the Republican Senate majority deny a fair trial. The people will have been forewarned of that and will be expecting it.

I think it might have something to do with being seen by the majority of voters who don’t currently want to impeach, to be proceeding carefully and thoughtfully. Being forced into it rather than rushing towards it. It would be way too easy for the Right to spin impeachment investigations as witch hunts, while still busily obstructing justice.

We were told for the better part of two years that we couldn’t take action until Mueller’s Report dropped, that he would make the case for impeachment and the DNC would go from there. Well, the Report dropped over a month ago, it made a case for impeachment, but now we’re told we have to wait until the various and sundry investigations in Congress conclude before action can be taken.

What if we get to next November and the case for impeachment has never been made? Worse, what if people decide that the DNC’s failure to impeach means that there’s no “there there” to the whole matter? That he really was “exonerated” and the DNC has spent 2 years wasting the nation’s time and money on a wild goose chase?

And what if they start impeachment hearings and the administration still stonewalls them and things get tied up in court for months. Will people in flyover country suddenly marching in the streets for greater transparency? If Trump is impeached will he be convicted in the Senate? (Probably not) Will that somehow convince people Trump is a crook?

Being a recovering conspiracy theorist, I tend to discount grand plans that see people slowly being worked into inevitable doom in favor of believing that the ones in charge are gambling that their actions (even inaction) will have a favorable outcome or at least break even. And that’s what I see here, Pelosi and the rest of the leadership gambling that either they will land on a bombshell so massive that the polls will flip in favor of impeachment or that Trump’s absolute refusal to cooperate will hurt him politically.

Polls don’t flip in a short amount of time unless you do the work to convince people to change their minds. More likely, they change slowly - see marijuana legalization, same sex marriage - or they don’t change much at all. In other words: there’s no smoking gun.

As for hurting Trump politically, he’s already at his floor. His base, that 37% or so that he has a strangle hold on, isn’t going to desert him.

Participants were randomly assigned to one of two diets for two-week stretches: One group was fed an unprocessed diet full of whole or minimally processed foods like stir-fried beef with vegetables, basmati rice and orange slices. The other group ate an ultra-processed diet of meals like chicken salad made with canned chicken, jarred mayonnaise and relish on white bread, served with canned peaches in heavy syrup. When the two weeks were up, the groups were then assigned to the opposite diet plan.

It may be the wrong strategy, or it maybe the right one, but I suspect her understanding of the politics is superior to mine.

Larry is an unruly kid but otherwise okay. His mom? Wearing her pink Trump hat. Oh jeez. She isn’t just generally annoying, she’s a Trumper to boot. I pick up the pace, greeting her, as park etiquette requires, from as much distance as I can get.

Then Buddy stopped a bit too long to sniff and pee. Here she comes running, dragging poor little Larry along, to catch up to us. I groan, in NO mood whatsoever in my current rage at all things Trump GOP to force even casual civility. As they got close, Buddy the Hero, planted himself solidly in front of me, bared his teeth and snarled. LOL

The thing is, I knew he wasn’t snarling at Larry. He loves other dogs, Larry included. It worked. She quickly backed away, assuming it was a dog thing, with a happy “we’ll talk later!” Yeah, no, don’t think so.

I groan, in NO mood whatsoever in my current rage at all things Trump GOP to force even casual civility. As they got close, Buddy the Hero, planted himself solidly in front of me, bared his teeth and snarled. LOL

Heh. That reminds me of a section in Gavin de Becker’s book “The Gift of Fear” - he described how some people wait to see how their dog reacts to a stranger before deciding whether said stranger is trustworthy/good or not. De Becker says that if the dog reacts negatively, it’s not because they’re picking up on the stranger’s bad character - they’re actually reacting to distress cues from their owners, and then their protective instincts kick in.

I feel you. I’ve been investigating quick healthy meals i.e. stuff that I can cook in less than 30 minutes using minimal dishes. There are some options but it is challenging. The last thing that I want to do after getting home from work and saying hi to my pets and dealing with the days mail and whatever else is cook.

Sometimes I will also cook a large batch of something when I have the time and then eat off it for like four days.

salmon/tuna/swordfish filet in parchment with veg of your choice (broccoli, asparagus, green beans, whatever) with lemon or (my fave) a bit of mango chutney.
prep time is about 5-10 minutes, then 20 minutes in the oven at 400F.

Disgustingly healthy and very tasty

I think that’s mostly true. I am completely convinced after a long lifetime shared with dogs that they are sensitive/empathetic to the point of mind-reading. I have no doubt that’s what happened with Buddy this morning. That said, I have had experiences when my dogs have reacted negatively to someone for no apparent reason that I know I didn’t communicate and that are otherwise unexplainable. Yeah, I trust the dogs and back away.

Here’s what troubles me about all these laws. It’s a general trend moving backwards on issues. We should be strengthening not weakening the right to choose. Ireland to its credit has moved forward on choice and LGBT issues. It’s a wonderful country. I actually studied there but I never thought in my wildest dreams that they would be more socially progressive than we are.

I think the problem here is that I could see it pass by a wide margin on a nationwide basis — but fail in GOP-lead states. The Senate would not allow such legislation to pass to protect women nationally. The only way for there to be a change in attitude is if some senior GOP officials lose loved ones because of this heinous legislation, and that won’t happen because they will just send people out of state or out of the country to have the procedure performed on them.

No doubt. TBH I don’t advise doing what the Irish did with SSM and abortion rights being put up to the vote like that. I think certain rights like that are ingrained in our Constitution but what I was getting at was that I was surprised that abortion being legally wasn’t something that was just popular in the Irish Republic’s cities such as Dublin or Galway where I studied but it also passed in rural areas too as did SSM. What I think we’re going to need to do is have a federal bill that strengthens the right to choose. .

This assumes that Trump won’t get even more justices shoved through in the next coming year, and that we have a Congress that would ever dare allow a Dem president’s judges to ever make it. A huge reason why Trump had as many vacancies as he did was the GOP stonewalling as many of Obama’s attempts to fill vacancies as possible, and unless we own Congress wholly, it’s going to happen again on steroids

“This country”, as in 50 near-sovereign-to-sovereign States under a supranational government, SHOULDN’T survive Trump. If it does, we’ll just have the same sets of problems over and over again because they’re INHERENT IN THE CONSTITUTION and it basically is incapable of being amended in our favour unless we somehow gain majorities in 20 currently-red states.

At this point, I’m much more devoted to making sure that the “ideals this country was theoretically founded on” are revived after Trump.

Most probably do at that point or at least suspect enough to get a pregnancy test. However, there’s a lot more to consider, like $. Abortions aren’t cheap. It can take time to raise the money. There are also availability issues - where is there a clinic? When can I get an appointment? And work issues - when can I get a day off? Try to squeeze all that into maybe a week.

It’s a ban.

I knew I was pregnant but the tests kept coming up negative. They said, wait another week. Negative again. Finally, visual inspection and yeah, pretty sure you’re pregnant but gotta have that positive test. It only came up positive at about 12 weeks.

It looks like Mueller has evidence of people in congress obstructing justice. I bet Devin Nunes is worried.

He should be.

And these legislators want to investigate miscarriages too. Scary shit.

Basically, so far as I can tell, part of the effect is to make it effectively-illegal for any woman between menarche and menopause to consume alcohol, because if she does and then damages a zygote/embryo she has no idea she’s carrying, she trips the circuits in the law.

And this being amabama, there’s no way they’re gonna avoid drinking for 35 years.

Of course. DeVos doesn’t give a fuck about American students.

She fucking makes money off it.

No, wait, seven of them… Neutral Good, Chaotic Good (very rarely, but occasionally), Lawful Neutral, True Neutral, Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil; depending on the mood and/or situation

Which is why the so-called “alignment system” is so crappy.

re: #175 Eclectic Cyborg

Though I am now retired and thus have more time for cooking and dishes I found that getting home from work and cooking was not that arduous an activity. Routine was was a quick sort of the mail when I got home; e.g. the junk stuff went into a trash can down in the mail room and never made it into the apartment. Pets were greeted as I came in and put my bag and mail on the desk. Pets were then fed since I was usually getting home at their regular feeding time. (If I was early I did a bit of dinner prep and then fed them.)

Depending on planned meal I might have thawed things in the fridge overnight or picked something up on the walk home. Since I was only cooking for one it was pretty easy to make something like a sauce for 3-4 meals and then use that for multiple meals. And from experience putting together a quick red sauce for pasta was a fairly quick process - and the idle time while it simmered and pasta cooked was time to spend with pets or fix something to drink.

re: #230 Mike Lamb

The federal judiciary below the SCOTUS level will bounce back quickly. There is a lot of annual turnover.

Only if there is a sufficient majority in the Senate of Democrats. Otherwise any non-GOP administration will have its appointments blocked as effectively as the GOP can do so. They have learned that it works as a strategy and won’t simply give it up.

I absolutely REFUSE to believe this country cannot survive Trump. America is better than the orange shitgibbon would have you believe.

I’m not going to stop fighting.

It’s not surviving Trump that scares me. It’s the groundwork that has been laid via Trump for further erosion of the social foundation that the country’s stability depends on.

A minority thinking they can roll back the country (or world) to 1850 mores is delusional. It’s a bit like France (and the UK) expecting that post-WW2 that they were going to easily reimpose their colonial empires.
